How To Include People Into Your Landscapes

A great way to add dimension to your landscape photograph is to include people. When you bring a person or a group of people in your pictures, they suddenly get a different feel and look to it. Personally, I love to include people into my landscapes, whether it’s a stranger or someone I know.

Mykonos, Greece

A beautiful view of a mountainous landscape may be breathtaking, but if you add a human into it, the viewer can connect with the image and help create more of a story. After all, we create pictures to keep memories and stories from disappearing.

Adding people can also create a sense of scale. When there is another element in the photograph, the viewer is able to compare its size. This makes it easier for the viewer to understand how big those hoodoos are because there is a reference point.

The size of the human also doesn’t matter because we tend to recognize humans right away. No matter how small the human is, viewers will always be able to see it. However, you want to make sure that you don’t make the human too big or else it will become an outdoor portrait photo shoot.

Shadows are also a great way to add dimension to landscape photographs. I find myself looking for my shadow all the time. Shadows are cool because it is essentially a reflection of who I am. It also creates a sense of symmetry and parallelism.

Now, can you see my shadow?
